What you need to know about breast cancer

If you follow our blog then you would be aware that this month is Pink Ribbon month, which is a campaign that is all about raising awareness of breast cancer and teaching people about early detection and how they can reduce their risk of developing the disease.

Early detection of breast cancer is extremely important as women who are diagnosed at an earlier stage of the disease generally have higher survival rates than those with more advanced breast cancer.

So what should you be looking out for? According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation website the following could be early signs of breast cancer:

  • A lump, lumpiness or thickening of the breast.
  • A change in shape, crusting, a sore or ulcer, redness or inversion of the nipple.
  • Discharge from the nipple that is blood-stained, clear or occurs without squeezing.
  • Changes in the skin of the breast, such as any puckering or dimpling of the skin, unusual redness or other colour change.
  • Changes in the size or shape of the breast. This might be either an increase in size or a decrease in size.
  • Unusual and persistent pain that is not related to the normal monthly cycle and occurs only in one breast.

Visit your doctor if you notice anything that you’re suspicious of, and if you’re aged 50 to 69 then you are advised to go for a breast cancer scan every 2 years at one of the 500 BreastScreen locations across Australia.

Now that you know what to look out for, it’s important to also know what you can do to help reduce your breast cancer risk.

Unfortunately age and family history can be risk factors for developing the disease, but there are other risk factors related to lifestyle choices. According to Cancer Australia the following are risk factors:

  • Alcohol intake: Research has shown a strong link between alcohol and the risk of developing breast cancer. To reduce your risk of breast cancer, try to limit your alcohol intake to no more than two standard drinks a day.
  • Weight: Women who put on a lot of weight in adulthood, particularly after menopause, may have a higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Not being active: Studies have shown that regular exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer. You don’t need to sweat it out at the gym to get the benefits. Moderate exercise, like a brisk walk, can be enough to reduce your cancer risk. And the more you do, the greater the benefits.
  • Not breastfeeding: Breast may be best for both you and the baby. The more months spent breastfeeding, the lower the risk of breast cancer.
  • Not eating well: A healthy diet, of at least five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruit a day, may help to reduce your risk of cancer.

Professionals Fairfield Real Estate are committed to supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation in their mission to find a cure for breast cancer, but until a cure can be found it’s just as important that people are aware of what can be done to help prevent and detect breast cancer.

We hope that anyone who reads this will take the time to learn about their risks and to check for any changes in their breasts.

If you want to help support the NBCF you can list a home with Professionals Fairfield Real Estate (we donate a portion of every property sold to the NBCF) or you can head into our office to donate or to buy Pink Ribbon Merchandise.

Help Professionals Fairfield Real Estate raise funds for breast cancer research

October is a very important month for Professionals Fairfield Real Estate because it is a time when we ramp up our fundraising efforts to help our Diamond Partners, the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF).

A portion of every property sold by a Professionals Real Estate agent goes towards the NBCF, and as a group we are extremely proud to have raised more than $2.4 million for the charity so far.

The NBCF uses these funds to undertake important research which has so far helped lead to a greater understanding of breast cancer, as well as better therapies and an improved quality of life for those diagnosed with the disease.

But much more still needs to be known about breast cancer, and the Professionals will continue to stand by the NBCF until they reach their goal of  ‘Zero deaths by 2030′ and beyond.

During October’s Pink Ribbon Month, the Professionals group will be selling Pink Ribbon merchandise and holding fundraising events such as sausage sizzles, bake sales, auction nights, morning teas and gala events all across Australia.

If you would like to help us contribute funds to breast cancer research then you can drop into the Professionals Fairfield Real Estate office on 3/16 Nelson Street in Fairfield during October to make a donation to the NBCF or to buy Pink Ribbon merchandise.

We also encourage everyone to head to www.nbcf.org.au to see how your donations are helping in the fight against breast cancer.

Professionals Fairfield Real Estate, Turning Pink For A Cause

This year across Australia more than 14,500 women will likely be diagnosed with breast cancer.  The good news is that over the last decade, the five year survival rate has improved by ten percent, which is largely thanks to earlier detection through regular mammograms and improved treatments.

Our Professionals Fairfield Real Estate team, alongside the Professionals Real Estate Group, are proud to have formed a Diamond Partnership with the National Breast Cancer Foundation.  Our Professionals Real Estate office in Fairfield continually raises money throughout the year by selling National Breast Cancer Foundation merchandise.  Our Professionals Fairfield Real Estate team also donate a portion of commission to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for every property we sell.  We are partners with the cause, we feel passionately about the cause, and we pledge an annual fundraising commitment to supporting the cause, in turn trying to make a difference in our Fairfield community.

Our Professionals Real Estate Group goal for 2012 was to increase our total amount raised to 2 million dollars.  We are incredibly proud to say, as part of the Professionals Real Estate Group, that we have now achieved this goal.  As of October 2012, all Professionals Real Estate offices have worked together to raise $2,000,000 to help unlock the key to curing breast cancer.

However, our support will not stop there!

With every house sold we continue to add to this total, so if you’re thinking of selling your home in Fairfield, please call us on 9727 5122.  Alternatively, if you’re not ready to sell your slice of Fairfield real estate but you’d still love to make a contribution, please visit us at Professionals Fairfield Real Estate to purchase your own Pink Ribbon Month merchandise or to make your donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Time to Register for the 2012 Mother’s Day Classic

Mother’s Day is still more than a month away, but if you’re thinking about taking part in this year’s Mother’s Day Classic then now is the time to register.

The Mother’s Day Classic is a walking and running event aimed at raising funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and their work in breast cancer research, which as you may have noticed from our signage, Professionals Fairfield are strong supporters of.

For some families the Mother’s Day Classic has become a yearly tradition where everybody spends the morning of Mother’s Day, running or walking together and then enjoying a BBQ and entertainment afterwards.

For others, the Mother’s Day Classic is about the competition and being the first to the finish line for the 8km running event, or maybe beating a personal best of previous years.

The Mother’s Day Classic will be taking place at the Domain in Sydney and at Parramatta Park in Parramatta on Sunday May 13 from 6:30am. All of the details about how to register and when each race starts can be found at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au.

So get your family together and start wearing in your running shoes so that you can spend this Mother’s Day helping to raise money for breast cancer research.

Help the Professionals Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

The Professionals Fairfield office is involved in fundraising events all throughout the year, but October is an especially important month for our office, because it’s Pink Ribbon Month.

Pink Ribbon Month is an initiative of the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), helping to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

The Professionals as a group are proud Diamond Partners to the NBCF and as such we do whatever we can to help support their cause.

This month our office will have pink ribbons, pins, pens and all of the pink ribbon items for sale and we’d love for the Fairfield community to get involved with the NBCF mission, even if that just involves wearing a ribbon during Pink Ribbon Month.

For all of those who also want to help raise funds for the NBCF, visit the Pink Ribbon Breakfast website and find out what you can do to help fight breast cancer.
