It’s time to get your swimming pool ready for summer

The temperatures are starting to warm up in Fairfield and if you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool at your home then it’s a good idea to get it ready now so that can be used when those sweltering hot days arrive.

If you have neglected your pool over the winter months then there’s a good chance that bacteria and other nasties have built up in it and this can create serious health risks such diarrhoea, ear infections, and eye and skin irritations. Not to mention it doesn’t feel very nice to swim in a pool that is cloudy and full of leaves and rubbish.

So to make sure that your pool is clean and safe to swim in this summer, take some time to perform a bit of pool maintenance.

1. The first thing you need to do is clean up the pool and pool area. Trim any overgrown trees and shrubs that hang over your pool and make a mess, and clear away any leaves and debris on the ground.

2. Check your pool equipment and ensure it’s all running as it should be. You will probably have some leaves and debris in the skimmer box that will need cleaning out.

3. If you have a winter pool cover then give this a good clean before you store it away.
4. Ensure the pool’s pH level is within healthy levels. The ideal range for pH in swimming pool water is 7.0 – 7.6.
5. Make sure chlorine levels are adequate so that they disinfect all microorganisms.
6. Organise a check-up with a pool professional. Your pool should be checked regularly to make sure that it remains healthy and safe to use.

7. Once your pool has been cleaned up, remember to vacuum and skim it regularly to keep it clean.

8. Check that your pool meets local and state pool and pool fence safety laws and requirements. Contact the local council if you’re unsure about pool safety guidelines.

9.Teach your children about pool safety and always ensure that there is an adult supervisor around whenever a child is near the water!

10. And last but not least – enjoy your pool for the summer!

Are you lucky enough to have a pool at your Fairfield home? If so, is it ready for summer swimming?
